Specialist and heavy plant finance

Finance for the plant that does the heavy lifting.

Plain-English guides for contractors, quarry and recycling operators, tree and land-clearing crews and farmers buying cranes, crushing plant, chippers, telehandlers and tractors.

Why specialist plant is different

Plant is bought for the contract, so finance should follow the work.

A general loan guide will not tell you how a crane earns or how a crusher wears. These are the four questions that come up again and again.

Utilisation

How many days a month does it really work, and what covers the repayment in the quiet ones?

Wear and consumables

Liners, knives, screen media and wire rope are a running cost that moves with the work.

Paperwork and tickets

Inspection records, licences and operator availability can matter as much as the steel.

The exit

Specialist plant sells into cyclical markets. Plan how it leaves before it arrives.

The rated figure is a ceiling, not an average.

Work out what the machine will really earn across a month before you compare repayments.

The path of a purchase

From quote to commissioning.

A typical sequence for buying plant with finance. Every business and lender differs, so treat it as a map rather than a rule.

  1. Scope the work

Decide what the machine must do, how often and for whom.

  2. Price the package

Attachments, float, tickets, wear parts and set-up sit beside the sticker price.

  3. Check the numbers

Compare repayments, fees, term and the end-of-term position.

  4. Enquire for finance

A lender assesses the business and the asset against its own criteria.

  5. Deliver and commission

Inspection, handover, operator sign-off, then work.

Illustrative only

How a quote might read.

A made-up example to show the shape of the numbers. It is not an offer, and real terms depend on the lender, the asset and your business.

Example machine price (ex GST)
$120,000
Example term
5 years
Example rate
from 8.5% p.a.*
Example monthly repayment
about $2,460

*Illustrative only, not a quote. The comparison rate will differ once fees and charges are included. Always compare the comparison rate, fees and total cost. See ASIC MoneySmart for independent guidance.
